Ion Exchange Resin Regeneration

Phibro-Tech, Inc. is deeply invested in safeguarding our planet’s most precious resource — water. With our Roll Up Regeneration process for removing hexavalent chromium (Chrome 6) and other contaminants from Strong Base Anion (SBA) exchange resin, we’ve established ourselves as pioneers in water treatment solutions that are innovative, environmentally responsible, and cost-efficient.

Phibro-Tech has been managing Chrome 6 contaminated residual waste disposal from SBA resin from drinking water customers for over a decade. This led to the development of our signature Roll Up Regeneration process to reduce operational complexities and costs for water suppliers.

The Roll Up Regeneration method streamlines the treatment process by requiring less monitoring and maintenance, and no onsite storage of hazardous chemicals or waste. Designed to be efficient and effective, this approach offers a smaller footprint and is effective for well sites without access to a sanitary sewer.

Phibro-Tech’s Hexavalent Chrome 6 Treatment Qualifications and Experience

At the core of Phibro-Tech’s operations is our RCRA Part B permitted hazardous waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF). This facility plays a crucial role in our capacity to treat metals contaminated waters.  We treat approximately six million gallons of inorganic hazardous waste annually.  Since 2015, we have successfully transported and treated over 500 tanker loads of chrome contaminated water from drinking water districts.

Phibro-Tech provides comprehensive transportation coverage across California. We are an NSF 60-certified supplier of ferric chloride for drinking water treatment. In addition, we hold ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications.

Utilizing our qualifications and experience, Phibro-Tech continues to lead the way in Chrome 6 contaminated water treatment, providing safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant solutions.

How Phibro-Tech’s Roll UpTM Regeneration Works

Phibro-Tech will

  • Provide an NSF 60 -compliant brine solution blended to specification.
  • Transport the brine solution to the customer’s well in lined tanker trucks.
  • Work with the customer’s operator to offload the brine solution and run it through the water column at the right speed and pressure to effectively regenerate the resin and rinse chrome and other contaminants.
  • Transport the contaminated waste brine to our permitted TSDF in our lined tanker, and provide a manifest.
  • Treat and reduce the Chrome 6 to non-toxic Chrome 3. We’ll properly dispose of the Chrome 3 and other contaminants and return the water to the POTW  (publicly owned treatment works).
  • Submit manifest copies to the EPA e-manifest portal.

Roll Up Resin Regeneration Benefits

Simple

  • Simplest treatment method for the site operator
  • Runs passively with no chemical additions or secondary processes required of the site operator
  • No onsite storage of hazardous chemical or waste
  • Simplified permitting and reduced public relations concerns
  • One vendor to provide NSF-certified brine, transportation, service, disposal, and reporting

Cost Saving

  • Less capital expenditure than reduction coagulation filtration and weak base anion exchange resin
  • Lower operating cost than single-use strong base anion exchange resin or weak base anion exchange resin

Space Saving

  • Smaller footprint relative to reduction coagulation filtration
  • System scalable to available space

Time Saving

  • Column can typically be taken offline and returned to service in less than six hours
  • Regeneration frequency expected to be between one and six months, based on water quality.

Phibro-Tech’s TSDF’s Co-Contaminant Treatment Capabilities

SBA exchange resin is effective at removing other contaminates in addition to Chrome 6.  Designed for treating hazardous waste and metal-laden chemicals, Phibro-Tech’s robust wastewater treatment system treats not only chromium, but other common well water contaminants, including:

  • Arsenic
  • Chlorides
  • Manganese
  • Nitrates
  • Sulfates
  • Uranium
